News: Homebound Older Adults at Higher Risk for Depression

Dr. Namkee Choi, a professor at the UT School of Social Work, made a presentation to the CAN Community Council on Monday night about Late-Life Depression in Austin’s Homebound Older Adults. A depression screening tool was used with 762 clients of Meals on Wheels. The findings showed high rates of depressive symptoms among homebound older adults, especially among those aged 50 – 59.

Dr. Choi is working with the Aging Services Council, a CAN Issue Area Group, to conduct a research project on the efficacy of using Telehealth Problem Solving Therapy to help those found to at risk of depressive disorders. The study is funded by the National Institute for Mental Health. Dr. Choi’s presentation is posted on the CAN website under Community Council presentations.
