The thought of moving in with an adult son or daughter would make most independent seniors cringe, and is the last resort for many family caregivers.
Not so for the Joan and Melissa Rivers. Yes, the catty commentors who frequent the red carpet have their own reality TV show built on the premise that Joan has moved into her daughter’s household, to much hilarity. The show seems to mostly show Ms. Rivers, a comedy legend in search of a comeback, creating chaos in her daughter’s life.
For us here at the AGE Blog, we wonder if a reality show like this will reinforce negative images of living with adult children, or forge new opportunities for non-traditional families to be portrayed in mainstream media. Certainly, seeing Joan’s imposition on her daughter Melissa, comandeering her household and such, will be the main comic fodder, but maybe seeing more multi-generation households in the media could be a good thing.
