The problem with many sprawling cities, so common in the American South and West, is that many areas of town are not walkable. Even if you do not have mobility issues, this will be a problem for the community as the aging population in Central Texas grows. -SP
AUSTIN (KXAN) – With a wheelchair, Jennifer McPhail prefers a smooth surface when she is out and about in Austin. But in certain parts of the city, that is the least of her worries.
“According to a study by TxDOT [Texas Department of Transportation], there have been 70 accidents involving pedestrians in vehicles in the past 10 years,” said McPhail.
She is talking about a 1.5-mile stretch of North Lamar Boulevard between Rundberg Lane and East Braker Lane — what the city said is likely the riskiest stretch for all pedestrians in Austin.
The area has long gaps between sidewalks and does not meet the Americans with Disabilites Act standards.
